For about a year now, I have been part of Social Media Club- DC, my local branch of an organization designed to promote media literacy and share resources. The club host events, discussions and workshops on the impact of new media on many forms of industry from health, to government and now, education.

Today, I participated in the first online chat discussion between educators, social media guru and students about the integration of social media and education. Aside from the confusion over the #smcedu or #smceducaht hashtag, (we’re sticking with #smcedu if you want to follow along on twitterchat.com)  two of the major points discussed at this first-time event were  social media education cirricula and the integration of social media into education. Since there are still so many questions about this topic and I am certainly new to this area, I didn’t offer answers I just listened. Next time, I hope to add more to the duscussion and see more people join the conversation.

These are the major points I gathered from the discussion, in case you missed it:

  • Question: How to measure the success of social media and education?
  • How do develop the quality of social media curriculum?
  • How to measure  of schools using social media?
  • Question: Is there current research or materials on SM courses or educational integration?

Participators didn’t exactly come to a resolution or answer to any of these questions, but it was good to see them interested and questioning the same issues. It will be a great way to find commonality among educators and students alike. We found that in the future there is a need to

  • Set baselines for measurement
  • Establish SMC-EDU as a 501c3 non-profit organization
  • Determine mission, vision, goals  and direction for SMC-EDU
  • Create a physical space (wiki or blog)for collection of ideas and sharing information

For more, take a look at this summary of tweets by Ph.D candidate Ana Adi from the University of the West of Scotland.

During the chat she offered a few suggestions

#1. move chat to platform with video, audio & chat integration

#2. take notes from chats

#3. create blog/forum

#4. create online journal

#5. create a monthly blog talk show w/guests

#6. start collaborating

I would also add

#7. Set questions prior to the start of the chat and set time limits to talk about each question. Perhaps limit to 4 questions within the hour and have varying topics from week to week.

#8 Invite quests or moderators to host each week

Did you participate? What did you think?

If you aren’t familiar with Social Media Club search for one if your local neighborhood they are popping up all over the US and over seas. If you would like to join our weekly chats about education specifically, or start your own chapter of SMCEDU, follow the twitter hashtag #SMCEDU each Monday at 12:30 EST.
