As a senior journalism major in college, I was required to create a portfolio of my newspaper clips, graphic design work, research papers, press releases and pieces I had worked on throughout my four years.
I assembled it in a professional 3-ring binder. I was so proud!
It has only been four years since I graduated and looking back, that 3-ring binder is an archaic method of presentation. As technology continues to grow at lightning speed, I advise students to create a digital portfolio to collect their work, not a hard copy.
For journalism and media, photography, or graphic design students, an electronic portfolio is a cheap, easy way to collect work. An online portfolio can do the same thing as a tangible portfolio, it serves as a hub of digital work. Students can showcase pieces from internships, special courses, projects, group affiliations and more and the best part is the URL web address of an e-portfolio can easily be added to an email signature, resume, a business card or personal website.
More perks?
- E- portfolios give students the ability to share.
- E- portfolios allow for ongoing feedback.
- E- portfolios give students a chance to reflect on their own growth and progress.
How popular are e-portfolios among students today? I conducted a twitter query and Google search to find 10 student (or recent graduate) examples.
