Last week, Facbeook made some pretty exciting announcements at their F8 conference, one of which was the addition of social plugins. Facebook is gaining popularity in many higher education institutions, with some offering contests, planning special events and recruiting students. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Facebook start to show up on more and more college campuses as both a marketing and learning tool, as this technology continues to develop.
Do You Like the New Facebook Apps?
New features of Facebook include applications such as the “Like” button, which lets users share pages from your schools website back to their own Facebook profile, and Recommendations which gives visitors personalized suggestions for pages or areas on your website they might like. Take a look at some of the other plugins available from Facebook- maybe they can be used for your website or blog.
Facebook Extras
If new apps weren’t enough, developers jumped at the chance to play with all of this open data on Facebook. Sites such as LikeButton.me take users “Likes” and collects them into categories and lists. Imagine knowing what brands your curernt or potential students preferred over others, what television shows, music or books? The possibilities are endless with new social plugins.
Is your institution using any social plugins from Facebook? How do you, as an educator or administrator, feel about the new application? If you’re interested in adding the “Like” application to your website or blog, just follow these easy step-by-step instructions and start sharing!
* A Quick Update
I completely missed this handy article from HighEdWebTech, which also points out some examples of the new “Like” button and how to add it to your blogs or webpages. Enjoy!
